What is it?

Character Counts! is dedicated to encouraging the Lincoln community to develop the Six Pillars of Character - namely Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.  The National Character Counts! program has already been incorporated into school and community functions, and this committee supports these efforts. The goal is for the children to know, understand, and implement these six pillars in their daily lives and interactions at school and with every person they encounter.

The Lincoln Character Counts! committee coordinates 2-3 service projects during the school year.

At Lincoln, we have assigned each grade to one of the Six Pillars of Character.  There is a color scheme that goes along with each of the Six Pillars.  The Character Counts! program defines the traits as follows:

Trustworthiness - Blue - Kindergarten

Think "true blue"

Be honest • Don’t deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable - do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal - stand by your family, friends and country

Respect - Yellow/Gold - 1st Grade

Think "The Golden Rule"

Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

Responsibility - Green - 2nd Grade

Think of being responsible for a garden or finances; or as in being solid and reliable like an oak

Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere, keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act - consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices

Fairness - Orange - 3rd Grade

Think of dividing an orange into equal sections to share fairly with friends

Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly

Caring - Red - 4th Grade

Think of a heart

Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude • Forgive others • Help people in need

Citizenship - Purple - 5th Grade

Think regal purple as in representing the state

Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get involved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment

When is it?

Events are scheduled throughout the school year.

Volunteers needed?

A Chairperson and/or Co-Chairs to coordinate the service events.  They also need parent volunteers to assist at the events.

How much time does it take?

The time commitment is varied and minimal.  The Chairperson is encouraged to attend some monthly meetings with Character Counts in Elmhurst, and the remaining time is to coordinate the service projects.
