The Reflections Program was established in 1969 by the National PTA. Since that time, more than 10 million students have participated in the program. The program's longevity and participation figures attest to its strength.
The PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students. The Reflections Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected theme, while increasing community awareness on the importance of the arts in education.
Participation and appreciation for the arts is the Reflections Program's goal. Although the Reflections Program follows a "contest" format, winning is not the emphasis. Participation in the Reflections Program is a great way for students to explore and learn about various art forms. Creating art is a valuable learning process that challenges students to use their critical thinking skills as well as their creative talents to create art that supports a specific theme.
Young artists may submit an entry in any of the six arts areas listed below. Only original works of art are accepted. It does not matter whether an entry created for the Reflections Program has been created as a classroom assignment or independently at home. Depending on local PTA guidelines, students may enter more than one work of art. Once judged at the local level, the winners go on to the council and/or district judging. Those winners go to the Illinois PTA to receive recognition. The best project in each grade level, from each category, will advance to the National PTA level. The six arts areas are as follows:
Literature
Musical composition
Photography
Visual arts
Dance Choreography
Film/Video Production
When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, photography, and other art forms, they grow intellectually. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. They learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way, and they become more interested in the ideas and works of others. The Reflections Program also helps parents encourage and recognize the continuous self-discovery process of their children.
The Grade divisions are:
Primary (preschool-grade 2)
Intermediate (grades 3-5)
Middle/Junior (grades 6-8)
Senior (grades 9-12)
